Schloss Bruchsal - Palace of Bruchsal

Bruchsal Palace is the only ecclesiastical baroque residential palace on the Upper Rhine. The palace was built beginning in 1720 by Prince Damian Hugo von Schönborn, the than Bishop of Speyer, who made it the center of his absolutistic reign. Von Schönborn did not rebuild the old Speyer residence destroyed in 1689, but instead decided on a representative new building modeled on Versailles. With the location in Bruchsal, the holder of religious and secular power also avoided continual conflicts with the Protestant "Reichsstadt" (free imperial city) of Speyer.
In the period after 1836 the numerous buildings stood empty. Following the destruction in 1945, the state of Baden-Württemberg succeeded in reconstructing the main building and its splendid appointments between 1964 and 1975.

Peterskirche - by Balthasar Neumann

The Baroque Church of St. Peter's is a very special church for the city of Bruchsal - partly because it is the work of famous Baroque architect Balthasar Neumann, partly because it is the only church in Bruchsal that survived the heavy bombing of March 1945 undamaged. Underneath its 22 meter high dome lies the royal tomb, the resting place of the mortal remains of the prince bishops of Bruchsal. The interior has been remodeled several times during the church's 250 years of history. The modern celebration altar dates from 1999. At regularly scheduled tours you can learn more about the historical baroque jewel.
