Landau in der Pfalz

Landau in der Pfalz is a little town in the southern part of the Land Rheinland-Pfalz, the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate in the region Südpfalz, Southern Palatinate between the river Rhine and the Pfälzerwald, Palatinate Forest. It is a university town and one of the biggest wine harvesting townships in Germany. As of December 1st, 2007 the town has 43,185 inhabitants.
The parish includes an area of 82.7 sq km, of which 57.4 sq km are the actual town, 24.5 sq km are the town forest at Taubensuhl / Fassendeich and 0.8 sq km are the Wollmersheim Forest near Eschbach.
Rathausplatz, the Townhouse Square of Landau is at 142.5 metres above the sea.

Jugendstil-Festhalle - Art Nouveau Festival Hall

Landau's Festival Hall was built be­tween 1905 and 1907 by the Düsseldorf ar­chitect Hermann Goerke in the style of Southern German Art Nouveau.
Although the artistically grouped external features of the structure remained for the most part untouched throughout the deca­des, renovation work carried out on the in­terior in the years 1958/1959 and 1971/1972 which involved extensive change had a major effect on the original work of Art Nouveau.
General refurbishment work carried out from 1999 - 2001 succeeded in signifi­cantly restoring the original image of the Large and Small Halls. This went a long way to re-capturing the air of splendour and quality once secured through the work of art now lost.
The old stage machinery underwent rareplacement and the stage area and foyer were rearranged and extended. The Large Hall received movable platforms to accommodate multi-level seating.

Altes Kaufhaus - Old Merchant's House

  • 1415 first mentioning of the then free standing building

  • 1995 conversion into a culture centre

The beautiful drawing on the side facade explains the history of a "Landauer" called carriage, named after this town since the 18th century.

Stiftskirche - Protestant Church

Protestant town parish church. Basilika with nave and two aisles, construction starting in 1281. In 1490 addition of the second aisle with late gothic reticulated vaulting. During the reformation the inside was separated with an iron fence; the choir for the Catholics and nave and aisles for the Lutherians. Since 1893 it is owned by the Protestants. Frescos dating back to the erection time are important pieces of gothic painting.

Schleusenhaus - Watergate House

The Watergate House (Schleusenhaus) was built between 1902 and 1904 by the parish Landau and its master builder Wilhelm Schach as a "Zentralspritzenhaus".
It is built on top of the front watergate of the Queich canal. The side building was used as a carriage depot.
After the restauration in line with generally accepted conservation practice the building is now used as a residential and commercial building.
